I know I'm being dense, but will someone explain paucle's "one letter" questions, please?

He's done hundreds of questions, in a couple of different series, in which the answer is two halves(sometimes 2 words, sometimes a single word) which differ by only one letter. For example:
Tic tac
inning
canaan
Yoo Hoo
Hip Hop

Now he's not doing them as a series, just as an occasional question "type" like Ana-pairs or cryptics.
