any tips? Tried every year nobody got voted by BBWAA (1996 being most recent), then every year nobody got in at all (as in no inductions), then... every year. Tried "never."

Never mind- tried the one year I didn't try.
Although not sure how you have the inside skinny on who the Verteran's committee is going to vote for. They always get someone in now, they hate not having induction ceremonies in August.

Oops! Hank O'Day and Jacob Rupert are in fact this year's entries.

It was on the news the other night.

Ah, you misheard then. Nobody was voted in this year. There are already 2 (3, actually) entries for the August inductions.
Also, the other thing that confused me was the phrasing- since this vote just happened a couple days ago, the usual implication is "So when's the last time that oddity happened?" The just-happened event is assumed excluded from the question.
Say a Catholic is elected President in 2016. Two seconds after it's confirmed, someone says, "When's the last time a Catholic was elected President?" 99.9% of the people who know the answer would say "1960." Nobody would assume they mean the thing that just happened.

Hmmm, I'm quite sure I heard the sportscaster say there wouldn't be any entries. Oh well, the q wasn't a complete loss, thanks to your helpful hint.

There won't be any of what most people think of as "Hall of Fame entrants" ie famous players who retired in the past several years. But there are entrants from the other groups (who are chosen differently and who usually don't get much attention because they aren't famous names).
